Container Reworking and Transloading at Rail Terminals

Container transloading and reworking / re-balancing occurs in terminal when a container has been damaged and or the container is imbalanced and deemed unsafe for the road or to continue on rail.   When loading containers for rail; we follow the AAR intermodal loading guide to ensure the freight is secured properly and makes it to destination without shifting and undamaged.

We find every type of commodity in containers.  Having a wide variety of specialized equipment helps us in transloading or rebalancing containers.

Open Top Loading / Transloading

Open top loading requires some special skill, considerations, and oversight.  If your securement method fails, there is nothing holding the load on to the railcar.  This is why all Class 1 railroads have special teams to oversee the load planing of open top railcars.

We load open top flat, gondolas, centerbeam flats, and bulkhead flats.  We follow the AAR Open Top Loading Guidelines to secure your load and ensure your freight arrives at destination without damage.

When loading open top; the commodities we see most often are dimensional lumber, engineered lumber, plywood, rebar, steel I beams, steel plate, and ingots.

Specialty forklifts, and cranes are the most common pieces of equipment we use when loading, unloading, or correcting open top loads.

High Wide and Dimensional Rail Shipments

In 2021, we started doing a dimensional rail shipments.  These are open top loads that require special loading and planning due to there height, width, and or length.   When loading dimensional loads, consideration needs to be made about the route the railcar is travelling.   Placement and dimensions of bridges, tunnels, signs, and signal lights are all taken into consideration to determine the correct route open top loads need to take to avoid and catastrophic damages to the load or rail infrastructure.  When loading these types of shipments; balancing the load on the railcar as well as securing the with the correct methods are critical in ensuring safe transport to destination.

Common dimensional freight is military equipment, mining equipment, construction equipment, wind turbines / blades, and hydro transformers.
